Life Groups

Life Groups are small groups of people (usually between 5-12 people) who meet regularly in homes to connect with others and to help each other take their next step of faith, whatever that may be. Our hope is that everybody who calls Southridge their home church would connect in a Life Group so that they can experience the difference that intentional relationships can make in our lives!

Frequently asked questions:

What exactly is a Life Group?

To answer this question, let's start with what a Life Group is NOT:

  • A Life Group is not a social club! While we hope that your Life Group would be a place where you would meet people and make new friends, a Life Group is much more than a social club or a friendship circle.
  • A Life Group is not a support group! While we hope that your Life Group would be a place where you would be comfortable sharing your struggles, you will not be expected to share your deepest darkest secret and to cry every single night!
  • A Life Group is not a classroom! While we hope that your Life Group would be a place where people learn from each other and grow in their knowledge of the Bible, Life Group is not a "fill-in-the-blank", teacher-at-the-front, classroom type of environment.

Rather,

  • A Life Group is a place where you can connect with others and develop real and honest friendships.
  • A Life Group is a place where you can find support and encouragement as you journey through the ups and downs of life.
  • A Life Group is a learning community where you can grow with others and learn from God's truth together.

What can I expect to happen at a normal Life Group meeting?

The purpose of Life Groups is to help you connect with others and to grow spiritually. Some groups are a bit more formal and like to spend more time in the Bible and praying while others are a bit more informal and like to spend more time socializing. Every group is different - it depends on the group!

Generally speaking, a typical Life Group meeting will include these three elements:

  • Food and Socializing
Most groups take the time to enjoy some food together and to check in and see how everyone is doing.
  • Study and Discussion
On an average night, the bulk of the time will be spent on some sort of study and discussion. The study will usually be based on a curriculum that the church has recommended and/or that the group has decided to study together.

  • Sharing and Prayer
Usually, there will be a chance to share prayer requests and to pray for each other as a group. However, if you are uncomfortable sharing and/or praying out loud, you certainly don't have to do so!

How often do groups meet and how long are their meetings?

Most of our groups meet weekly, although some meet bi-weekly. The average length of a Life Group meeting is usually 2 to 3 hours, depending on the group.

What kinds of groups are there?

Most groups consist of people around the same age, stage of life or point of interest (young families, young adults, women's groups, empty nesters, singles, etc...), while others don't really care and have a nice mix. It depends on the group.

What days of the week do groups meet?

Each group meets on a different day and at a different time. Again, it depends on the group!

How do I join a Life Group?

To join a group, you need to attend the next Life Line event.

What other kinds of events and socials does the church do?

Sometimes we plan larger get-togethers (date nights, women's events and men's events) so that we can do things that we can't do in our Life Groups. Check out the Group Life Calendar for more information.

Do I have to be a Christian or church member to be in a group?

No! Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, there's a place for you.

I'm interested in leading a group, what's my next step?

That's great! We're always looking for potential leaders. Your next step is to fill out a "New Leader Application Form" and to leave it at the reception kiosk for Jeff Jantzi. Feel free to visit the Leader's Area for more details.

Who oversees the Life Group ministry?

Ben Lockyer, Jeff Jantzi, and Jon Nauta oversee the Group Life ministry together.
