New Hope Childrens Home

title

But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
Psalm 10:14

Amanda Williams is the founder of New Hope Children’s Home in Mandeville, Jamaica, a home for orphans up to the age of 6. The home is equipped for up to approximately 25 children.

Amanda’s current challenge is finding a new house. The current house is built on three levels and it is proving burdensome to carry the children up and down many times each day. It is also difficult to get water in the current location. The house is on the top of a hill and needs a pump to get their water supply. Many times the pump isn’t working and filters for the pump are also hard to come by. When the pump does not work, water must be delivered which is expensive and often hard to get in a timely manner. Typically water costs US$500/month. As well, the plumbing is starting to need repair and electricity is also expensive.

Staffing can also be an issue as the home receives funds from the government based on how many children they are currently caring for. Downsizing staff in an organization in Jamaica can prove to be an expensive venture because of severance policies. Therefore, when there are fewer children in the home at any given time it can prove to be stressful. When financial donations are made they are gratefully received but they do not come in on a regular basis.

Work continues to help the New Hope Children’s Home in Jamaica keep moving forward. Some of the projects already completed include curtains, aprons for the staff and footed pajamas provided by the Grade 7 children in the Southridge Kid’s Ministry. Future projects include receiving blankets, more curtains and change table covers. Southridge has also had the privilege of visiting and participating first hand in the ministry of New Hope numerous times.
