Released in 2008, Religulous is a documentary by comedian Bill Maher, who described the film as “the final battle between intelligence and stupidity that will decide the future of humanity.” It was a film created for the sole purpose of making fun of the ridiculous nature of religious belief and it could have been really funny, were it not, at times, so tragically real and true. Religion has done its share of damage. It has created some of the most irrelevant, money-grubbing, dangerous, and judgmental organizations on the planet. It has left a wake of bodies in its trail, spiritually, emotionally, and, all too often, literally. Is this really what Jesus had in mind? Are these religulous experiences really all there is? Or is there something more to this thing we call “Church”?
Nov 8, 2009 – I’m Just Not Into Organized Religion
The numbers just don’t lie. With less than 30% of Canadians citing religion as being “very important” in their life, it is not surprising that almost 75% of Canadians opt out of worship in any given week. Canadians, it seems, are spiritual but just not that into organized religion. They just don’t see the need to attend a service to find meaning, purpose, peace and hope. So what’s the point of organized religion anyway? Is there even one good reason to “go to Church”?
Nov 15, 2009 – Christianity Is Boring, Untrue And Irrelevant
It’s been said that, “In the Church, we invite people to sit on 17th century technology to sing 18th century songs with 19th century instruments and we wonder why people think that we’re out of touch!” To many people, the Church feels entirely dated and more than a little irrelevant to our everyday lives. It is the major reason why so many have chosen to disengage from the Christian community without feeling any sense of loss. Is society slowing losing its way or is God really that out of touch?
Nov 22, 2009 – All The Church Wants Is My Money
Ok, you’ve done it. You’ve finally given in to your insistent friend and (semi-reluctantly) agreed to come to church for the first time. You find a seat and are just starting to actually get into the music and then… you guessed it! Here comes the Church, its hands in your pockets, demanding more money! The Bible itself warns that, “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” So why does the Church always seem to want more of it and its corrupting influence? Do they honestly believe God needs our money?
Nov 29, 2009 – Religion Is Responsible For More Evil Than Good
It was not for nothing that Christopher Hitchens’ recent attack on religion was titled, “God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.” In recent years, between 9/11 (and its violent aftermath), pedophilia in the Church, and the phrase “God Hates Fags,” the new millennium seems to be unfolding as just another chapter of religious violence in our world, where people in Belfast, Beirut, Bombay, Belgrade, Bethlehem and Baghdad are dying because of religion. Is Hitchens right? Is religion really evil?
Dec 6, 2009 – Christians Are Arrogant, Judgmental And Smug
According to the book UnChristian, only 20% of Church “outsiders” (those who would not claim to be born-again Christians) believe that Christian Churches “accept and love people unconditionally, regardless of how people look or what they do.” Instead, 80% of “outsiders” find the Church to be “prideful and quick to find fault in others.” Wow. There’s really not a lot of uncertainty about the kind of people who fill the Church. It makes you wonder why, in the words of Gandhi, Christians are “so unlike their Christ”?
